"You know what? Screw this. If anyone needs me, I’ll be in Margaritaville."

Sunday (10/10/04) 12:52pm - ... wherein Peter tries to participate in "The Gift of Music."

They've got a fun Christmas tradition over at SongFight! called "The Gift of Music."  It's sort of a Secret-Santa/covers thing.

EDIT: I keep changing my mind about which songs to ask for; for my current choices, consult the wiki.

To quote "niveous," who posted the announcement:
Here's the concept- anyone who wants to be a part of this cover challenge simply needs to post here, telling me that they're in and listing 4 songs. These 4 songs are 4 songs that you really like and would like to hear covered. Once the list of participants is compiled, the names will be tossed into a hat and paired off. From there, each participant will get a message telling them who they'll be giving the gift of music to as well as the 4 songs that person chose. The participant picks 1 song from the 4 and covers the song. Then on the due date, we post the results and everybody wins.
Here are last year's results.

Even though I haven't SongFighted ("SongFought?") in ages, I'm grovelling to get in on it. :)

And, of course, scratching my head over what songs to include.

Here's my top four so far:

  1. Come on Fhqwgads -- Homestar Runner

    • A chance for a songfighter to have some fun, plus an opportunity for those beep-and-click MC types to strut their stuff.  Plus, Glenn Case had good results covering "We Like the Moon," so I'm keen to see what people can do with Flash-cartoon-music.

  2. Alliwanna Do Is **** Your Hair -- the Judybats

    • I feel duty-bound to include at least one song that rocks, because there are plenty of noise-to-the-wall rock combos on the SongFight boards.  And this one doesn't get heard nearly enough; plus I don't have a very hi-fi version of it, and a well-executed cover would make me happy.

  3. She's Only Cool -- Cotton Mather

    • I wanted to have one plain ol' pop song here.  Obviously I've got to include something from Cotton Mather or the Wondermints, and most Wondermints songs sound really tough to sort out the chords for, let alone play.

  4. Career Opportunities -- The Clash

    • I likewise feel duty-bound to include at least one song that people have actually heard.  This one seems easy to play, fun to get into, and (as proved on Sandanista!) can be adapted to a wide variety of musical treatments. :)

Cotton Mather

I would have picked "Spin My Wheels" or "My Before and After," but yep, anything by Cotton Mather would be poptacular. :-)

Well, I have a couple of weeks to mull over my four choices, so I'm sure the specific song will change many times as go through my Rob-Fleming-ish paces. :)

More Judybats?

A fifth album? I only have through full-empty - where does one find the their non-album tracks? Grr, I say. Grr.

Maybe one day I'll find a copy of The Heartthrobs' third album Vertical Smile...

The current model of music distribution sucks.

As far as I know (and AMG backs me up on this), there are only four studio albums. "Alliwannado" was indeed one of their B-sides.

I have the collection "Hold Your Horses," a fan-manufactured B-sides collection, on audio cassette. [1] I've tried scanning it into the computer, but I never sorted out how to do that without getting this weird high-pitch hiss on all the tracks.

Ah well. Even more tracks I would willingly pay money for, but, alas, yon record companies won't sell them to me. :(

[1] The improv setup named "Just Like Life" used to consistently make me snicker, because there's a very good Judybats B-side of that title.
