Wednesday (11/12/08) 9:40am - ... wherein the coat arrives.
Okay, the new coat (which I've been gleefully hyping on twitter) arrived a couple of days ago. No pictures yet, but it is this style of coat.
Things I like about the coat:
It's a bit different, with its three-quarters-ish length and five-button arrangement.
But still, it doesn't look wacky enough to go out of style.
It's the right weight for Austin -- a fairly light wool/cashmere fabric with a heavy satin lining.
They indulged my request to put small zippers on the inside pockets; fortunately, the zippers don't make the fabric drape funny.
The arms are long enough.
Things I don't like about the coat:
Something's badly off with the shoulder/armpit area. I can't reach up for something without that entire side of the coat riding up. I guess I'll take it to a tailor, but I don't know how fixable this is. Grr. Made-to-measure FAIL.
It looks a bit more smocklike than I expected. I suspect that I chose a lighter fabric than the one shown in the picture, and that makes the whole garment look a little less constructed.
So: a minor letdown, although after the ludicrous hype, anything would have been. We'll see how I feel about the coat after a week or two.
The armpit/shoulder weirdness might be an indication that the coat doesn't fit properly. I know that's a common problem with suit coats that are slightly off. You don't really notice until you raise your arm and then the whole shoulder lifts off your body. The tailor might be able to fix it, or at least tell you not to worry about it.
