Monday (12/15/08) 2:19pm - ... wherein Peter ponders SoFlex.

I'm still pondering going to SoFlex (the South Flordia Lindy Exchange) next month.

I tend to think by writing, so I figured I'd write for a bit about whether I should go or not.  This may not be of general interest.

Generally speaking, I've been using three criteria for whether I should go to an event.  Let's go over those first:

1.  Is it somewhere I want to go anyway?
Tentative "yes".  I don't recall Fort Lauderdale being much of a cultural mecca the last time I was out that way[1], but I do recall the beaches being very nice, and the tourist kitsch being pleasant enough.  It may be that, come mid-January, I really do need to fly away and go sit by the ocean for a spell.

2.  Will I know anybody there?
This is looking like a rather emphatic "no".  According to facebook, I will know exactly two people there.

3.  Is it a competition?
No.  Nor does it list performances.  I don't like competition- and performance-heavy events, so this goes in the plus column.

Offhand it looks like it could be something pleasant along the lines of DCBX, or it could be a small pile of fail.  I suppose I can look at additional criteria and see if that helps:

a.  How much does it cost?
AUS/FLL plane tickets look to be in the $225-$275 range.  Direct flights are available.  Times are tolerable.  I imagine I'd fly back on Sunday evening as opposed to Monday morning.  (I have yet to have a good time staying through to the bitter end of an exchange.)  Registration is $85.  So we're looking at $350-ish + the usual smorgasbord of travel expenses.

b.  How will I get along with the folks I don't know?
Owing to the economic slowdown, ALX wound up with relatively few out-of-state visitors; it looks like SoFlex will be the same way.  How will I get along with all the Floridians?  I haven't heard anything either way about the relative friendliness of the Florida scene(s), so for now, I'd call this a known unknown.

c.  Is anything else of interest going on that weekend?
Hmm.  I'd wind up missing that weekend's ASG read.  It's the off weekend for Kick Butt Blues, so I wouldn't miss that.  I would miss the mid-season premiere of BSG, but I imagine the Drafthouse would re-run it the next week.  Beyond that, I don't know what's going on in Austin that weekend apart from the usual improv shows.

Bleh.  What a paucity of information to work from!

Anyway, I'll decide one way or the other on this in the next few days, 'cos the available flights are dwindling.  *sigh*  It would be a frustrating $400 gamble even if I were making this decision right before the dance weekend.  But now I'm trying to account for how I might feel next month.  Will I feel like travelling?  Will I feel like dancing?  Will I be in dire need of sunlight and company?

I'm currently leaning no-wards.  It's a lot of money.  Dancing has been a bit 'meh' lately.  I've been having spotty luck with exchanges and with travel.

But I'll keep kicking around the dilemma for a few days.

[1] Technically, it looks like the dance events take place closer to Boca Raton, about 20 miles up the beach.

I don't mean to be snarky in asking this; I'm genuinely curious. Why do you go to out-of-state exchanges and dance events, anyway?

No, that's a perfectly sensible question, especially given my checkered history with dance-related travel.

I'd say first and foremost it's an excuse to travel, in which case the "why go to exchanges?" question reduces to the "why travel?" question, and the answer has to do with wandering through museums, sitting on beaches, and so on.  The events themselves tend to be pleasantly social, so even somebody like me winds up accumulating a far-flung collection of dance acquaintances, and that's nice.  And *shrug* dancing is fun.  There are usually huge crowds of talented dancers and hours and hours of good music.

Of course, you weigh that against the cost, and the inconvenience, and the possibility of getting horribly ill.  Thus the dilemma.

(Did that answer your question?)

Yeah, that all makes sense. It's probably true to a certain extent that I can't help but look at dance stuff through a decidedly jaundiced lens, hence the puzzlement. But if you're getting more out of it than just the dance stuff, that's brilliant.

Also note:  when you are the shiny out-of-town person, you are well insulated from the politics of the local scene.

This, in fact, may be the single best reason to travel for dancing.

I think you inadvertantly talk/reasoned yourself out of going... most what you listed are reason you wouldn't care to go. (i.e. not comp or performance to watch, nothing standing out for the locale)

I would say, a few years back SOFLx was one of the top events to be at. I know Nathan (and possibly Tina Davis) will be there to DJ, so you'll know at least someONE there.

As to Ft. Lauderdale, can I tell you that my experience was that we drove to South Beach, so it wasn't even local, although their downtown area is more colorful and has a Cheesecake Factory (and some local shi shi cuisine). Is it worth a trip to you?

Brief clarification:  I usually don't like performances and competitions, so 'no comp or performance' is actually something in SoFlex's favor....
