Peter Rogers's Blog
Artist-in-Residence at Chez Firth

Wednesday (12/31/08) 3:12pm - ... wherein Peter answers the end-of-the-year meme.

Courtesy of wanderlust_atx, here is the year-end-questionnaire meme:

1. What did you do in 2008 that you’d never done before?
Got paid actual money to act on stage.  w00t!  (And I probably had a larger audience in one night than all the audiences who saw me act at Rice, combined.)

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I made no resolutions for 2008.  I have made resolutions for 2009.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not that I recall.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Nobody close to me, no.

5. What countries did you visit?
None.  (Hey, this quiz is easy!)

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
Hmm.  A completed pilot spec, I think.

7. What date from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Keeping up schedules on the blog:  weekly sketches, Spanish posts, and media updates.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not writing a script longer than five pages the whole year. :(

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I was sick for weeks and weeks.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
A phone that plays podcasts.  Walking from point A to point B is now much less tedious.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My sister's.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Yeah, like I'll answer that in an unlocked post.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Uh... rent?  Apart from that, I spent lots (and lots) of money on travel.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Screenwriting projects that subsequently fizzled.

16. What song will always remind you of 2008?
Crooked Fingers, "Twilight Creeps".

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?

ii. thinner or fatter?
Marginally less skeletal

ii. richer or poorer?

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Pinging social-networking sites.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
Visiting family.

21. How will you be ringing in the New Year?
Probably wandering around downtown.  First Night, yo.

22. Did you fall in love in 2008?

23. Who was your hero?
Jane Espenson, for guiding her gentle readers through the vagaries of TV-writing, and doing a bang-up job on season four of Battlestar Galactica.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
Hmm.  I'll limit this to TV shows I saw for the first time in 2008 -- and in that case, the clear winner is Pushing Daisies, the show that was too twee to live and too great to die.  The pie that burns brightest, burns shortest.  Wait a minute that makes no sense

25. What was something you needed to do and didn’t get around to?
Sell some of my NI stock and diversify it.  (Guess I lucked out there....)

26. What was the best book you read?
It's a tie between Born Standing Up and The Ghost Map.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The 25 Days of Newman brought much laughter to my holiday season.

28. What did you want and get?
A role in the Shakespeare in the Park show.

29. What did you want and not get?
A prize in that ONNetworks webseries contest.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
If I could count Sunday in the Park with George in this category, it would win.  (I finally saw the old PBS recording this year)  Failing that, I think Once takes the prize.

31. What did you do on your birthday?
My car died, so I stayed home all night writing blog posts and reading scripts.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Y'know, maybe songwriting would have helped.  But the more certain answer is "picking a lane".  I suspect if I had picked one hobby and focussed on it, the year would have felt more satisfactory.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?

34. What kept you sane?
This blog has been the escape valve for all the insanity that has been trebucheted into my life.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Hmm.  Good question, and no answer immediately presents itself.  I suppose I've been fancying people IRL more than in celebriland.  *shrug*  Christina Hendricks, I guess.  There's also this odd crush on Kristen Schaal.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Eh, probably the usual "culture war" crap.

37. Who did you miss?
apthorpe headed off to Chicago last month.  *sniff*

38. Who was the best new person you met?
To my surprise, I've met a fair number of people this year, mostly through the improv jams, dance travel, and the vagaries of the Interw3bs.  So I can't answer this without slighting a bunch of people.  *raspberry*

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008:
"Sometimes there's no lesson.  Sometimes you just lose." -- Dwight Schrute

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
"Studying a face, / Stepping back to look at a face / Leaves a little space in the way like a window, / But to see -- / It's the only way to see." (link)

I LOVE pushing daisies. Its campy, silly, and thoughtful at the same time. It also has a great cast. Good call!

Thanks, ddneyal!

Sadly, I've only seen season one so far.  I go on about it a bit here, here, and here.

I think I told you about this website once before, but I'll tell you about it again in case it got lost in the masses of comments you get. You can watch the second season on www.surfthechannel.net. Its not quite as user friendly as it once was, but still not a bad way to watch for free. Enjoy. =)
