Thursday (9/15/11) 9:23pm - ... wherein Peter has trumpet-related questions.

Like I mentioned yesterday, my improv commitments will go down significantly as we get to the end of 2011, and I'm planning activities to fill the freed-up time.  Among other things, I'm planning to finally have a go at learning the trumpet.

So, this leads to lots of questions, which I'm throwing out to the Great Hivemind.

1.  How should I go about shopping for an instrument?  Could I buy a used trumpet in the $150-$250 range and get something suitable to learn on?  Or would it be wiser to lease an instrument?

2.  How much does instruction cost around here?  Would it make sense to take a half-hour lesson per week?  Would practicing for half an hour per day be reasonable?  (And will my neighbors want to kill me?)

I'm also curious about how long I'll be in "I can only make this horn sound like a dying cat" territory, but I assume that varies widely from person to person.

I played a note on a trumpet once in a show! You have to make your lips vibrate. That is all I remember.
