Saturday (12/5/09) 10:29pm - ... wherein Peter posts the chords to "Shine On Me".

Some years ago, I posted a couple of Wondermints  tabs here and here.  Recently, a reader asked me to post any additional Wondermints tabs I had worked out.  It turns out I do have one more song:  "Shine on Me", also from their album Mind If We Make Love to You.

Sunday (11/8/09) 1:19pm - ... wherein Peter posts a song.

Boilerplate bit:  with merciful rarity, I'll play a song I like on my old acoustic, record it on my home-recording setup, and post it to the blog.  You can see earlier entries here, or subscribe to these as a podcast (click here if you use iTunes).

If I ever had any music cred (and no, I didn't), now's the time I get to watch it all go up in flames:

I did some experiments with the teensy recording rig this weekend.  First off, I re-aimed the microphones to try to get a better vocal/guitar balance (still not quite there yet).  Second, I verified that I can record to my little netbook instead of using a proper laptop.  This was the result:

Hi all --

I'm finally unloading my box'o'audiocourses that's been sitting in the corner and gathering dust. I'll put them up on ebay pretty soon, but I figured I'd offer them to ze friendslist first:

Between the Shakespeare show, dancing, and being sick, there's been precious little time to record lately.  But now I think I'm back in the proverbial saddle.

Again, for people who are new to the blog, occasionally I'll play a song I like on my old acoustic, record it on my dinky recording setup, and post it here.  You can see earlier entries here, or subscribe to these as a podcast (click here if you use iTunes).

Monday (3/24/08) 9:43pm - ... wherein Peter posts a song.

Another month and a half has (have?) gone by, so:  time for another song.

I'd been toying with recording this one for a while:
#34.  Lost - The Mary Onettes

I'm surprisingly happy with this.  Sure, I have the usual accelerando problems, but I can listen to it without wincing, and I feel like I did something slightly different with the song without being silly and gimmicky.  Some of the low notes are a little dodgy, but I'm pleased with the higher notes at the end.

Side note:  the lyrics are a bit nonsensical to me, which made them damn difficult to learn.

As always, YouTube comes through with the original, in live performance.

Sunday (2/3/08) 4:22pm - ... wherein Peter posts a song.

Wow, it's been a month and a half since I recorded anything?  Sad, sad, sad.

Given my vocal register, it was only a matter of time before I put up a Magnetic Fields song:
#33.  The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side - The Magnetic Fields

I admit, I'm mainly putting this song up so that I put *something* up before I (say) forget how the recording equipment works.  Maybe I can get back to a regular schedule after this.

I'm painfully pitchy on some of the low notes -- listening to it, I wince as it takes a fraction of a second for me to locate the next pitch on the entrances towards the end.  And the guitar feels rushed throughout; I need to relax.  But then again, I was only able to do a couple of takes of this before I ran out of voice, so that sends perfectionism right out the window.

As always, YouTube comes through with the original.

Monday (12/24/07) 11:19am - ... wherein there is Christmas music.

Just thought I'd post a couple of fun Christmas tunes:
"Joy to the World" by The Fab Four -- a Beatles cover band notes the similarity between "Joy to the World" and "Please Please Me", with amusing results.
"Super Mario's Sleigh Ride" by The One Ups -- a Nintendo-music cover band manages to weave a half-dozen 8-bit tunes into Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride".

Happy $HOLIDAY, all!

Saturday (12/22/07) 2:12pm - ... wherein Peter posts a ukulelified song.

I've owned this ukulele for several years now.  When I first bought it, I couldn't event get the thing tuned, so I figured it was just a stupid, cheap toy, and I set it aside to gather dust among the unused recording equipment.  Then the other day I listened to this episode of coverville -- their annual Thanksgiving all-Beatles show -- and it included Paul McCartney playing "Something" on a ukulele.  I figured I could learn that, so I dusted the instrument off, and realized oh, right, it's untuneable.

I idly checked out its product page on musiciansfriend, and saw a bunch of other customers chiming in that, yes, out of the box it's awful.  But they also said all you have to do to fix it is tighten the tuning pegs with a screwdriver.  Lo and behold, they were right, and I now have a functional ukulele.

So I figured I'd play a song on that instrument this week (we can call it "Peterokelele", I suppose), and what better song to adapt than a massively-orchestrated tune from E. L. O.?
     #32.  Telephone Line - E. L. O.

As always, YouTube comes through with the original.

I dunno if I'd call this 'good' (especially since I'm singing through the tail end of this interminable sinusitis), but it is an amusing little novelty, and it was fun to learn all the new chord shapes for the soprano uke.
