Thursday (2/25/10) 8:04pm - ... wherein Peter answers formspring questions about music.

Here are all the music questions I've received so far on formspring.

What's your favorite genre of music? [1/28/10, automated]

I mostly like fairly innocuous pop music, with fairly innocuous soul music taking second place.

Out of all your creative persuits, which one gives you the most pleasure? [2/11/10 by ErinMolson]

I'd say "playing guitar". I may be misinterpreting the question, though. The act of playing guitar itself is not the most satisfying artsy-pursuit I have going, nor the most pleasurable, and it's definitely no aid to my social life. But I know that if I stop playing guitar every day, I get moody and stressed.

I imagine that guitar serves a meditative purpose -- it pretty much forces me to shut my brain off for a little while. It's also good for me to regularly do something I feel competent at. Plus, I spend so much of my day all flat-affect and unresponsive (imagine me staring, dead-faced, at a computer monitor all day) that singing something big and emotional makes me feel a bit more human.

Genre of music to last you until the end of your days? [2/11/10, anonymous]

The cheat here would be to say 'classical music' and expand it to include all Western art music, instead of just the Classical period.

But I'll say soul music.  I'd miss pop music something awful (no more psychedelia?  *cries*), but I suspect I'd enjoy spending the rest of my days exploring all the nooks and crannies of funk, neo-soul, various local scenes from the 60s, and on and on.
