Tuesday (2/15/11) 2:13pm - ... wherein Peter tries to be better-prepared for the next medical emergency.

So a couple of weeks back, I came down with a bad fever on a Saturday night[1]

I ended up getting phylomath to take me to the emergency room at St. David's, which was close by and frankly, was the only option I could think of.

Result:  I wound up waiting for three hours (!) for medical care, and I'm fairly sure that even after insurance it will cost me lots of money.

So, question for the hivemind:  if I find myself in a medical emergency in the future, where should I go?

If I have a normal health problem during normal business hours, I'll just get it taken care of at the on-site clinic where I work.

But what do I do if something severe happens, possibly outside of business hours?  What options are available in/near North Austin?

[1] Yes, that sounds like a song.  I mean the pukey kind of fever.

See if there's an urgent care center near you. They're usually not open around the clock but tend to have fairly long hours and MUCH shorter wait times. The one I went to when I broke my arm a few years ago was open 9 am - 9 pm every day of the year and I saw a doctor within 30 minutes.

...but hopefully you can stay healthy long enough not to need this any time soon!

Thanks! -- that seems to be the consensus over on facebook, too.

(One more item for the next advice column, I guess....)
