Day 6: A song that reminds you of somewhere.
The Grapes of Wrath, "O Lucky Man"
Treehouse was one of the three albums (Treehouse, Sam Cooke Live at the Apollo, Murmur) that I listened to over and over and over as a high-school kid. Hearing any of those can rocket me back to the brown carpet of my bedroom in the house on Wooldridge Avenue, next to the window that looked out on trees that are, in my mind, always stuck in late autumn.
And there I am, listening to a beaten-up cassette tape on my 'Yorx' brand bookshelf system (AM/FM radio, dual cassette decks, *and* turntable). There are books and games stacked on unsteady bookcases, and an old heavy wooden desk with a shoddy fluorescent desk lamp. There's a ceiling fan that wobbles just enough to make me think it might maybe fall on me. There are Escher prints on the walls, and truly hideous heavy beige-ish curtains. I'm scribbling away at some silly homework assignment.
And I am very, very unhappy, back then.
It's nice to now that all those games have now found a home with firth.
