Good Eats [season 10]
This is the tenth season of my watching-while-exercising mainstay, Alton Brown's sketch-comedy-infused, scientifically-informed take on explaining basic cooking principles. At this point, though, I have nothing to add that I haven't said nine times before: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 [guess I missed 7?], 8, 9.
The Witness [2016 video game]
Here's the short, spoiler-free take on the game: it's a very solidly-designed Myst knockoff. It has amazing puzzles, architecture, and landscaping. It does a fine job nonverbally teaching you to solve ever-more-complicated puzzles. But all that said, I didn't have fun with this game. I spent most of my 20-odd hours of gameplay feeling frustrated and impatient, and all I really got out of 'winning' was, as far as I can tell, the game gently *chiding* me for being frustrated and impatient. So: certainly an affecting experience, but not, I think, an enjoyable one.
The rest of this discussion is full of spoilers, which I've put in a separate post
For next week: I just finished another John McWhorter linguistics audiobook, and I'll write about it next week. I'll also catch up on writing about The Lego Batman Movie. Meanwhile, I'm still reading that book about the chemistry of cooking and I'm watching season one of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. While exercising, I'm on season 11 of Good Eats and season 3 of Last Week Tonight.
